Serving & Giving

Serving and Giving as Christians

“It is God himself who has made us what we are and given us new lives from Christ Jesus; and  long ages ago he planned that we should spend these lives in helping others.” (Ephesians 2:10)

God calls us to a life of service to others that is far beyond anything we can ever imagine. We were put on earth with gifts to use in service to one another…and in service to all of God’s great creation. We are given grace, but not instantly taken to heaven, for there is work to do in God’s Kingdom here on earth.

Each child of God is filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, given unique gifts and a valued role in the body of Christ – no one is without a special purpose or gift. Spiritual gifts are not talents or skills, per se, but rather God’s grace working in us to empower us to go into the world (far and near) to meet the deepest needs. Spiritual gifts are given to individuals, but also to be used to strengthen the community as we meet the needs around us.

The United Methodist Church provides an online Spiritual Gifts Inventory assessment that you can take as a way to discover your own Spiritual Gifts. It is a starting point, or a refresher point….and once you discover your Spiritual Gifts, you may want to pray with the pastor to learn more about how you are being called to use these in service to the Lord.
You can take the Spiritual Gifts Assessment at spiritual-gifts-online-assessment

There are many opportunities for giving at Indian Heights UMC, including sharing musical talents, helping with a Sunday School class, participating in one of our women’s or men’s groups, helping with lawn and labyrinth care, working in the community garden, offering care to our children, and more. We are blessed in Kansas City to have St. Paul School of Theology; it is an excellent resource for exploring one’s call to a variety forms of ministry. You can find out more about St. Paul at

June 28, 2018: “And Craig was Smiling”

Be Brave: My faith journey; finding grace, mercy, love and healing in the midst of chaos: "And Craig was Smiling"    Continue Reading →

My name is Ali, and this is me. I am who I am and believe that God put me on this world to spread the Good News of Christ to all of God’s people. To let them know they are valued, they are worthy, and they are deserving of belonging. Our world is broken and my own story is one of abundance, belovedness, family, heartbreak, hope. If you like what you read…share it…if you don’t, that’s ok – we can still be friends. God bless…and always know YOU are loved, YOU are ENOUGH, and YOU BELONG.  ~ Pastor Ali
